Who We Are

Our History

Hello! My name is Bill Moseley, founder of the Ortho Pedal™  but you can call me a knee geek!  It started when I was 5 years old and crashed my bike into the south end of a manure spreader, and I watched the doctor stitch up my left knee.  It continued until age 50, when I watched the orthopedic surgeon do a total knee replacement on my left knee!

A series of other knee traumas really began to shape my life in 1980 at age 17, when I was hit by a 72 Ford pick-up and blew out the acl, the pcl and the lcl ligaments, along with torn meniscus!

After ‘5 in 1′ reconstructive surgery and lots of physical therapy I was back on my feet until at age 19 a motorcycle crash destroyed the rebuilt knee and I started all over again.  The final blow to the knee was caused by an auto accident in 1984 at age 21 and experimental acl surgery was performed (using a ligament from a cow)!

I was 17 at the time of the truck accident and my orthopedic surgeon said I would need a TKR (or total knee replacement) in 20 years.  That was a reality shock for a very active young country boy.

I decided at that time, to listen to my doctors and make my knee rehabilitation my most important priority.  This is important to remember, for all of us suffering with knee pain.  Well, after the next two accidents and knee surgeries, it became even more important for me to focus on proper knee health for the rest of my life.

One common factor began to emerge from all of my knee rehabs, and that was how much my bicycle helped me.  It helped me regain leg muscle strength, knee stability, knee range of motion  and more.  More meaning,  my overall health was always better when I was biking and my mind, body and soul seemed to crave it the more I rode.

At age 40 I was told a total knee replacement was only a year or two away.  My kids were getting older, so I decided it was time to get back on the bike again.  At the end of that first season I rode a Century (100 miles) with my best friend!

During the next 10 years I was determined more than ever to ‘keep rolling’ with my knee.  I researched every knee study I could find and tested various supplements and products on my knee.  This is why I said earlier you can ‘call me a knee geek’!

My time on the bicycle became precious to me and my wife was very understanding.  However, it finally became obvious that the knee needed replacement.  Again, researched proved invaluable.

The first orthopedic surgeon I met with said yes, he would do it, but he would ‘have more success with a 75 year old lady than with me’ due to the amount of previous trauma!  I was then referred to Dr. Peter Sharkey at the Rothman Institute near Philadelphia, where I had the TKR surgery performed.

My knee developed arthrofibrosis (excessive scar tissue) in the joint from all of the previous surgeries and after 3 months of  difficult and painful physical therapy my knee was ‘frozen’ at 65 degrees flexion and 15 degrees extension.

I wanted to get back on the bike and ride, but all I could do was sit on an exercise bike and ‘rock the pedals back and forth’.  I thought this is such a waste of time and there has to be a better way.

My first physical therapist cautioned me that I may never walk stairs again.  My second physical therapist was more optimistic but sadly after one month, he died of a massive heart attack.

Finally, I worked together with an inventor/manufacturer and together we developed the Ortho Pedal™.  When the first set arrived for testing, I quickly installed them on my bicycle and saddled up to coast down my driveway.  After turning around, I rode back to the top. Words cannot properly describe the feelings I felt that warm April afternoon!

I did this (8) times the first day and repeated it every day afterwards.  My rides finally ventured out on the roads until (2) months later, I rode to the summit of the Blue Mountains, a 1500 foot climb!

Six months later, my passive flexion had increased to 85 degrees and my knee was able to lock straight.

Several years later, I am doing 25-35 mile rides again and have my goals set on doing a Century once again.   I still use my Ortho Pedal™ and can honestly say that without the Ortho Pedal,  I would never have been able to ride bicycle again.

My desire is to share this life changing device with as many people as possible to provide them the same bicycling  opportunities that I have been blessed to enjoy.
